A minimum of thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.
A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
